This here is not a bike tip, it’s a plumbing tip that utilizes old bike parts.
(Hardcore bikers spend all their money on bikes and bike parts and can’t afford to call the plumber.)

So, your sink is not draining because all that leg hair you shaved off last summer has clogged it up good. You are all out of drain cleaner because your black sheep uncle drank it during Thanksgiving. How do you unplug those pipes?

Well, being a longtime mountain biker, you have some old brake cables and housing lying around in the workshop, right? You do remember brake cables, don’t you? Grab a length of housing. Stuff in an old cable, and you can use it as a plumbing snake.

  1. First, fill the sink up to the rim.
  2. Next, push the cable and housing down into the drain, leading with the metal button that normally goes into the brake lever. When the end of the housing “makes the turn” in the elbow drain, quit pushing.
  3. Now, just move the cable in and out of the housing until it pushes the plug through the pipe. There should be a flushing sound as all that water goes down the drain.

That’s it! Take a bow, plumbing hero! You crack me up!

If you have any cycling tips (or household tips using bike parts)… send them in!
