The 2027 Orbea Carpe 20 28mph is a Class 3 urban e-bike on a hydroformed 6061 alloy frame with a full carbon fork, powered by a Shimano EP600 mid-drive making 85 N·m against a 420Wh battery integrated into the downtube. It ships with wired lighting, a 20kg-rated rack, full fenders, a kickstand and a bell. $3,780.
What Comes On It
This is the part that separates a real commuter from a bike you have to finish yourself. A Supernova Mini2 headlight at 235 lumens sits in the cockpit, a Supernova TL3 Mini handles the rear, and both run off the main battery instead of needing charging on their own schedule. Daytime running lights and a wraparound front lens improve how visible you are from the side, which is where the risk actually lives at an intersection. The Orbea RR-01 rack is rated to 20kg and takes MIK, MIK Side and Ortlieb QL3.1 pannier hardware. Full-length alloy fenders, a rear-adjustable kickstand, a Knog bell, and a stem-cap SP Connect phone mount are all fitted from the factory. Add those parts to a bare e-bike afterward and you are several hundred dollars in, with wiring you have to solve yourself.
The Motor And Battery
Shimano EP600 mid-drive, 85 N·m, tuned by Orbea for urban riding rather than trail use, which means it wants to accelerate hard from a stop and hold a steep street without you dropping to a crawl. Mid-drive matters here: the motor turns the chainring, so the bike keeps a normal cassette, a normal chain, and a normal derailleur, and it puts the weight low and centered instead of hanging off the rear axle. The 420Wh battery lives inside the downtube rather than clamped to it. If you need more range there is a 252Wh Orbea range extender available. Display is a Shimano EN500, with the EN600 cycle computer available as an upgrade.
The Drivetrain
Shimano CUES U4000, nine-speed, running a SunRace 11-46t cassette against a 44t alloy chainring with a guard. A KMC eGlide chain, which is built for the torque a mid-drive puts through it. Nine speeds instead of twelve is the right call on a commuter: wider spacing, thicker chain, longer service life, and parts any shop can get. Braking is Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc. None of this is exotic, and that is the point. Every wear part on this bike is a standard Shimano part we can source and fit without waiting on a proprietary supply chain.
Make It Yours
The Carpe is configurable through Orbea's MyO program, and on a commuter that is more useful than it is on a race bike. You can specify a folding stem and folding pedals if the bike has to live in a hallway or go on a train. You can move to the RR-02 rack if you need 30kg instead of 20. You can add a front carrier with a basket, a frame lock, the range extender, or the larger display. Colors run Diamond Black matt, Nickel, and Mars Red gloss. Ask us and we will walk through a configuration against how you actually ride, which takes longer than buying off the floor but gets you a bike that fits your commute instead of an average one.
How It Compares
Within the Carpe range, the 20 runs a Shimano CUES chain drive. The Carpe 10 steps up to a Gates carbon belt driven by a Shimano Nexus Inter-5 Di2 internal hub, which shifts at a standstill and never needs lubricating. The belt is the lower-maintenance answer and costs more. The chain is the cheaper answer to repair anywhere in the country, and on a nine-speed with a chainguard it is not a demanding thing to live with. Against the direct-to-consumer e-bikes at this price, the real difference is not the spec sheet, it is the mid-drive and the fact that the parts are standard. When a hub-motor commuter has a controller failure out of warranty, the answer is often a new bike. When this one needs a chain, a cassette, or brake pads, it needs a Tuesday.
Riding It Here
We are a mountain bike shop, so it is fair to ask why this bike is on our floor. The answer is that Chattanooga is a hilly city with a lot of short trips in it, and an 85 N·m mid-drive turns those hills into nothing. Add a 20kg rack and lights that are always on, and the trip you would normally drive becomes the trip you ride. We already service e-bikes, so the bike stays running here rather than going back in a box. Come in and ride it. We will fit it, set the assist to something sane, and send you out on it.
