The Gearing

This is the part worth understanding before anything else. A 40T ring paired with a 10-51T cassette gives roughly 510 percent range and a low gear under 1:1, which is mountain bike gearing on a drop bar. Most gravel bikes at this price run a 46/30 double or a 1x with a 44T ring and a 10-44 cassette, and both run out of gear on a sustained climb with a loaded frame bag. Around here that matters more than it does in Kansas. Gravel in this region means real elevation, and a bailout gear is the difference between riding a climb and walking it.

The Frame

Orbea Terra Carbon OMR, monocoque construction, 1,040 grams, with the layup tuned for compliance rather than pure stiffness. Cutouts in the fork legs and chainstays, combined with a relaxed 74-degree seat angle, let the 27.2mm carbon post flex and take the edge off washboard. The fork, renamed Terra Race ICR for 2027, is full carbon at 440 grams with long legs and sculpted relief. Clearance runs to 50C, or 45C with Orbea's own fenders fitted. BB386EVO shell, power meter compatible, UDH rear dropout, and dropper post compatible if you want one.

The Build

Shimano GRX RX822 SGS rear derailleur with RX610 shifters and an RX610 40T crank, running a 12-speed 10-51T cassette. Mechanical, not electronic, which means no batteries to charge and no proprietary parts to source when something needs replacing three years from now. Shimano RX410 hydraulic discs. Alloy tubeless-ready 700c wheels at 21c internal, shod with Vittoria Terreno T30 in 700x45c. Orbea's own OC Gravel GR31 bar at 70mm reach and 110mm drop, an RP23 stem, and a Fizik Terra Argo X7 saddle.

The Geometry

Orbea holds the chainstay at 430mm across all six sizes and varies the head angle instead, from 69 degrees on the XS to 71 on the XXL. That keeps the rear end short and lively for everyone while giving smaller riders more front-end stability where they need it. Reach runs 386mm to 417mm with a taller stack than most gravel bikes, which is a deliberate pairing with a short stem: precise steering without putting your weight over the front wheel on a loose descent. BB drop is 80mm, seat angle is 74 degrees, and fork rake is 45mm throughout.

Storage And Mounts

The frame carries Orbea's LOCKR XXL service box in the downtube, sized for a tube, a plug kit, and tools. The MMS multi mount system runs on both the frame and the fork, so cages, cargo bags, and fenders bolt on without straps or zip ties. Internal cable routing throughout, and fender mounts front and rear. If you are building this out for bikepacking rather than day rides, the mounting points are already there.

How It Compares

Within the Terra range, the M30TEAM 1x sits at the entry to carbon. Step up and you are buying electronic shifting and Oquo carbon wheels: the M20iTEAM runs GRX Di2, the M21eTEAM 1x runs SRAM Force XPLR AXS, and the M31eTEAM 1x runs Rival XPLR AXS. Step down to the H30 1x and you get a similar GRX 1x drivetrain on an aluminum frame. Worth knowing that the 2x version of this same build costs the same money on the same frame, so the choice between them is about how you ride rather than what you spend: the 2x gives you tighter jumps between gears, the 1x gives you a simpler cockpit, no front shifting to fumble on rough ground, and nothing to drop a chain off. The honest read on this build is that the frame and fork are the same platform the expensive Terras use, the wheels are the obvious upgrade path, and mechanical GRX is a feature rather than a compromise if you would rather not think about firmware on a bikepacking trip. This build is also available through Orbea's MyO program if you want to choose your own paint and finish, which takes longer but gets you a bike nobody else has.

Where It Rides

Gravel around Chattanooga and up into the North Georgia corridor is not flat and it is not smooth. Long forest service climbs, chunky descents, and pavement connectors in between. A 50C-capable frame, sub-1:1 gearing, and a compliant carbon layup is the right set of tools for that, and the 45c Terreno tires it ships on are a sensible starting point rather than a compromise.
