The Santa Cruz Blur 5 CC Deore is a 29-inch full-suspension cross-country bike with 120mm of travel front and rear, built on Santa Cruz's CC carbon frame with the Superlight suspension design, a RockShox SID Base fork, a FOX Float Rhythm shock, and a 12-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain. Claimed weight is 29.12 lb (13.21 kg). $4,899.
The Frame
Here is the part that matters most and gets the least attention: there is only one Blur 5 frame. Santa Cruz builds every build kit in the range, from this one to the $13,399 race bike, on the same CC carbon layup. Slimmer tube shapes, reduced ply overlap, and stiffer carbon in the high-load areas took weight out without taking durability with it. Buying the Deore build does not mean buying a lesser frame. It means buying the same frame with room to grow into it.
The Suspension
120mm front and rear, which is 10mm more than the previous Blur, with the shock's dimensions and weight unchanged. The revised leverage curve adds support through the upper-middle stroke so the bike stays efficient under power, then ramps at the end so you can use the full travel without a harsh bottom-out. A RockShox SID Base fork with a 3-position lever handles the front, a FOX Float Rhythm at 190x45 handles the rear. This is the working end of the range rather than the boutique end, and it does the job.
The Build
Shimano Deore 12-speed throughout, running the M7200 rear derailleur with an M6200 shifter, M6200 crank at 32t, and a 10-51t M6200 cassette. SRAM DB8 four-piston brakes on 180mm Centerline rotors front and rear, which is more brake than the XC category usually bothers with and exactly right for terrain that actually goes downhill. RaceFace AR Offset 27 rims on Shimano hubs with a MicroSpline rear. Maxxis Aspen AT 29x2.4 tires in MaxxSpeed EXO, the trail-leaning option rather than the race rubber. An SDG Tellis dropper is fitted at every size, up to 200mm on the XL.
The Geometry
A 66-degree head tube angle and a seat tube angle in the 75.7 to 76.2 degree range depending on size. Reach runs 425mm on the small through 500mm on the XL, paired with a 50mm stem and a 760mm riser bar so you sit in the bike rather than perched on top of it. Chainstay length grows with frame size, 433mm through 439mm, so the balance stays consistent from S to XL. Bottom bracket height is 334mm across the board. This is not old-school XC geometry, and the bike does not ride like it.
Storage And Details
The downtube carries an internal glovebox for a tube, a plug kit, and the small things you would otherwise forget. There is an accessory mount for CO2 and tools, an integrated chain guide, a downtube protector, and clearance for two bottles. Cable chunnels make routing serviceable rather than a bench-time penalty, which we appreciate more than you will. Every Santa Cruz carries the lifetime frame warranty and free replacement pivot bearings for as long as the original owner owns the bike.
How It Compares
Step up to the Blur 90 at $5,799 and $900 buys you a SRAM Eagle 90 drivetrain, a FOX 34 SL Performance fork, a FOX Float SL Performance shock, a OneUp dropper, and EXO+ casing tires. That is a real upgrade in suspension tier and a meaningful drop in weight. What it does not buy you is a better frame, because there is not one. The honest read on the Deore build is that it is the cheapest way onto the Blur 5 chassis, it weighs about four pounds more than the top builds, and the suspension is where you will feel the price. It is also the build we would point at for a rider who wants the frame now and would rather upgrade the fork in a year than wait a year to buy. If you already own parts, the frameset is $3,799.
Where It Rides
An XC bike with 120mm of travel, a 66-degree head angle, four-piston brakes, and Aspen AT tires is not a stopwatch-only machine. It climbs like a race bike and descends like a short-travel trail bike, which is the right combination for most of the riding around Chattanooga and across the North Georgia corridor. Come ride one before you decide on a size. We will set sag, dial the cockpit, and let you find out on dirt whether the medium or the large is your bike.
